I always wonder why perfectly nice people behave badly on the roads. The bigger the pileup, the worse it gets.

But it all makes sense when you look at what these pileups triggers - The SCARCITY MENTALITY:

  • Scarcity of time and patience :you are in a hurry to get somewhere. So you jump signals, break lanes and just claw ahead.

-Scarcity of space and resources : If I don’t keep edging ahead, I will get nowhere. There are anyways too many people vying to get ahead so I need to push my way through.

  • Scarcity of patience and basic civic sense: you keep honking when you can see there is no where to go but somehow we feel compelled to do something, so honking it is!

Multiple researches have shown, humans don’t do well in situations which trigger the ‘scarcity mindset’ - they tend to get competitive, selfish, aggressive and sometimes also dangerous.

Now extrapolate this to resources that we still enjoy fairly abundantly but are getting scarily scarcer by the day - clean water, breathable air, public spaces, fresh food and more. It’s scary to even think of the behaviours this would trigger. And that’s the part of #climatechange that worries me the most.

It’s not just changing our world, it’s changing us and not for the good. We just don’t see it yet.

PS: Have you noticed this change within your interactions and communities- would love to hear some examples.

I am a Climate Hypocrite. I practice climate advocacy and yet:

  1. I own a lifestyle brand, where I am essentially encouraging people to shop more. ( even if it’s conscious consumption with products with a much lower environmental impact.)
  2. I stay in a metro high rise, use the AC,a lot of gadgets and drive a petrol car.
  3. I am an occasional meat-eater
  4. My home is not entirely plastic- free (just yet)
  5. I use quick commerce services occasionally, although I could walk down 200 metres to the neighbourhood Kirana and get what I need.

Does this bother me? All the time. Do I try and do better? Everyday. Does this negate everything I do? No,it doesn’t.

We are all part of a system where being a ‘climate purist’ is extremely hard, and one of the main reasons people don’t shift - They think it’s too hard and it needs them to overhaul their entire life.

Start as a hypocrite, be one as long as you need to. Start at whatever point you find comfortable and build from there.

We are talking about changing behaviours here. It’s hard. We slip, we fail and then we start over. So be kind to yourself as you do this. ❤️

But do it - In this one case, it’s better being a hypocrite than being nothing at all. 😊 PS: drop a message if you are a proud climate hypocrite 🙌
