When I was testing out the Navi app, something made me stop in my tracks.

It was seeking to pull bank statements directly from my bank account-- that's legit. But the frequency with which it sought consent to access my statement-- everyday for 8 years--totally not legit.

Turns out Navi is among the top five lenders seeking consent to pull bank statements. Now, bank statements are a powerful underwriting tool. It gives lenders information they did not have before. Helps identify better borrowers and also get better at collections.

As for Navi, seeking/using data in creative ways is hardwired into its DNA thanks to Sachin Bansal's obsession for metrics. An approach that saw many of its leadership members quit in 2023.

But why Navi is doing this is also clear.

I write for The Ken on what is driving Navi to go to such aggressive lengths to pull your bank statement to lend.
