Highlights
I am conflicted about this market.
On the one hand, there is a good chance we will have a recession and a stock market correction, especially as wage inflation continues to be sticky.
On the other hand, consider that "the average of strategists’ year-end outlooks represents a decline of around 8% in the S&P 500 in the last six months of 2023. That’s the most bearish second-half view since at least 1999.” This suggests the market has priced a recession in at least in part.
But it is obvious that a recession is NOT priced in for the magnificent seven (AAPL, AMZN, MSFT, GOOG(L), NVDA, TSLA, META). After all, we all remember that in 2022, the darlings of 2021 got crushed. But are they recession proof.
And my eyes wander to my dog-eared copy of Kindleberger's "Manias, Panics, and Crashes".
So I started looking this morning for an ETF or fund that allows one to invest in market laggards, which right now is the market minus this handful of stocks. There is no such thing. However, I found a couple of interesting ETF proxies for the idea of underweighting the magnificent seven vs SPX, RWL being revenue weighted and EPS being Earnings weighted.
The concentration of the seven in RWL is 10.4% and EPS 22.8% vs SPY 27.6%.
Their performance has kept up with S&P until Covid. Since then RWL kept up overall while EPS lagged. Both, esp. RWL outperformed in 2022. Both, esp RWL have lagged in 2023.
RWL is the one that best moderates the craziness of the narrow market leadership but I’m troubled by the absence of earnings sensitivity ( but S&P partially makes up for this automatically by only including profitable companies). I may use RWL to add any exposure I want to, e.g. when I sell other US stocks, instead of SPY or QQQ, Just FYI - not investment advice.
