Take aways from first two days at the Arab Health conference: As always it's a pleasure connecting with our existing AlemHealth users and learning from them.

I think we’re just at the beginning of what could be a big shift in market share for advanced imaging modalities over the coming years. The most interesting feedback from our customers was the significant interest they had in new Chinese vendors of advanced imaging modalities like CTs and MRIs. While there’ve been ultrasound and X-ray vendors from China for a long time distributed throughout Africa and SE Asia, this year the discussion was around the sophistication of new vendors in the advanced imaging space from China. Previously, United Imaging would put on a big presence, but now we're seeing impressive kit from companies like MinFound, SinoVision, and Wandong. Their advanced medical imaging equipment is not only technologically progressive but also priced very cost-effectively, so much so that a new device from them competes well against 2nd and 3rd hand refurbished equipment from traditional vendors like GE, Siemens and Philips.

However, what was interesting to our users wasn’t just the price point, if was the approach of these vendors towards market penetration. They're not just offering lower-cost products; they're also providing vendor financing and support to back up their devices. The Chinese government provides favourable financing terms and loss provisions to the suppliers, which in turn then offer the devices for as little as 20% down to the facilities. The suppliers then have mechanisms like access codes to stop the machines from running in case payments aren’t made on time, making enforcement of the loan more likely with this quasi-repossession method.

This financial support is crucial for healthcare providers in emerging markets and ultimately makes advanced imaging technologies more accessible. But even more than that, our users commented that the new vendors are also far more willing to commit to sending Biomedical Engineers (BMEs) to any location, and they’ve been diligent about ensuring a reliable supply chain of spare parts. Whereas our assumption was that traditional vendors like Siemens, Philips, and GE had a deep supply of parts and BMEs out in the field, AlemHealth users had the perception that it was the opposite, that the new vendors were much more aggressive about gaining market share and serving this burgeoning customer base.

These developments are promising for the future of healthcare in emerging and frontier markets. I’m very excited to see how these advancements will enhance our ability to deliver quality healthcare services at affordable prices. How do you see these changing dynamics influencing the global healthcare landscape?
