Highlights
When I was the CEO of a healthcare analytics company, I witnessed a comedy of errors that was costing us millions.
Our data scientists would excitedly discuss improved p-values and R-squared results, while our business leaders struggled to connect these metrics to patient outcomes or operational improvements.
To them, this was everyday language. To our business folk? It might as well have been Greek.
This is a chronic problem.
Technology and business don’t speak the same language as a result of which companies are leaving money on the table.
So what's the solution?
One simple, actionable strategy: Create a common language.
How?
- Host joint workshops with both tech and business teams present where the other is
asked to clarify their understanding.
- Encourage engineers to explain the "why" behind the tech, not just the "what."
- Develop a company-wide dictionary with key business and technology terms.
I shared these insights at Columbia University. As I recounted my experiences, the room of senior PhDs and renowned researchers erupted in knowing laughter. They saw themselves in the story.
Here's the bottom line.
We're sitting on goldmines of data and expertise.
True collaboration is the key to unlocking this value. It's time to break down silos, create a common language, and unleash our full potential.
I'm on a mission to drive real business impact with AI and bridge gaps to create a fair digital future.
