Liquid AI. The startup, spun off from MIT lab, is developing a low-cost alternative to the transformers that power AI models.

Most gen AI applications today rely on the transformer architecture. Those applications feed vast amounts of training data into a model, which can in turn predict which words or images to return in response to prompts.

Liquid has proposed an alternative. It is developing foundation models based on liquid neural networks, which can learn from new information while they’re in use and not just during training. This efficiency means they would require less compute power than traditional transformers powering OpenAI’s models. This could be a game changer for markets like Saudi Arabia where the Ai infra is fast evolving, and demand outpaces supply.

In other transformer alternatives, Mistral AI and AI21 Labs have developed models using the Mamba design.

Commercial validation of these alternatives is still work in progress.
