As Director of Partnerships at Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative), I get to dream up creative ways to share our mission with the world. Most recently, this endeavor led us to create a perfume with the incredible D.S. & DURGA.
Those who know the origins of perfumery know this isn't the first encounter between sperm whales and perfume. Once upon a time, it was discovered that sperm whales (the kind we study at CETI) secrete a compound called ambergris. Elusive of a precise description, it is said to smell like the wood of an old church, tobacco, or the ocean tide.
LET'S DIVE features a synthesized version of ambergris, with other notes of marine water, seaweed extract, choya nakh accord, and wooly rock rose.
This collaboration with D.S. & DURGA introduces a fresh narrative between perfume and the sperm whale, and for anyone who gets to wear the scent, it’s an excuse to talk about how one day we might be able to understand what the whales are saying.
