I’ve just landed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It feels GRRREAT to be back in a city and country I love so much.

You know, I’m more optimistic about Malaysia today than I’ve ever been, and that includes the time when I quit my job to migrate here from the UK several years after the Asian Financial Crisis.

The current PM, Anwar, has been in power for approaching two years and is making all the right moves, getting stuff done with urgency. He's clamping down hard on corruption, I hear the cops don’t ask for bribes nearly as much they used to.

Malaysia is in the heart of the growth region of the world, it has linguistic and cultural links to the growth powerhouses of the 21st century, China, India, and Indonesia, yet everyone speaks English, the legal system is English-based and robust, it's a beautiful friendly country which makes it one of the 10-most visited countries in the world, it has a young educated linguistically-diverse population, a modern infrastructure, and is again politically stable.

It has recently attracted significant investments from Google and TikTok, a few hours ago Zhuhai CosMX Battery picked Malaysia for its US$250m plant.

I mean, Malaysia is now the only place outside Europe where Porsches are assembled. And several world-class universities have campuses here including Monash, Nottingham and Reading. It is rapidly becoming a hub for SE Asia.

Since the Mahathir era, Malaysia has lacked a dynamic leader determined to take it to the next level. But now it has one, although, ironically, Mahathir and Anwar aren’t exactly best friends!

Anyway, if you're looking to relocate, if your business is expanding, or if you want to have a great holiday, Malaysia should be on your radar. It is an outstandingly beautiful, peaceful and increasingly prosperous country poised for big things.

I wish to thank Mark Smith for his incredible work in the Foreign Office (FCDO). 👏👏👏

He will be missed.

Mark has resigned after almost two decades of dedication to the UK government. 💪🇬🇧

The circumstances behind Mark’s resignation, however, are extremely sad. In a resignation letter entitled “FCDO complicity in War Crimes”, he wrote…

“I can no longer carry out my duties in the knowledge that this Department may be complicit in War Crimes…”

“Each day we witness clear and unquestionable examples of War Crimes and breaches of International Humanitarian Law in Gaza perpetrated by the State of Israel...”

He went on to highlight how “senior members of the Israeli government and military have expressed open genocidal intent, Israeli soldiers take videos, deliberately burning destroying, and looting civilian property and openly admit to the rape and torture of prisoners.”

He said he has raised “serious concerns of illegality in this department, to be disregarded in this way is deeply troubling.”

He did the right thing in trying to instigate change. He did the right thing when nothing happened.

A huge loss for the FCDO. It should have never come to this.
