🎉🎂 I TURNED 8 LAST WEEK! 🎂🎉 You read that right - 8 years old. I am blessed to celebrate with friends and family. Even dressed up like my favorite childhood TV show character, Chavo Del Ocho. Jokingly, I asked for an 8 year old birthday party…and I got a party with Spiderman-everything. For me, a great name came with great responsibility. I think that’s how that quote goes, right? By the example set forth by my adoptive mother, I made a commitment to love and honor others as they loved me. So, on April 18th, 2016, I made the decision to legally change my name to Edward Lee.
👉 Firstly, I had been a victim of bullying due to my previous name, which was hard to pronounce. The constant teasing and ridicule from my peers had taken a toll on my self-esteem, and I knew that changing my name would give me a fresh start and help me regain my confidence.
👉 Secondly, I shared the same name as my father, whom I had an estranged relationship with. Every time I heard my name, it reminded me of the painful memories and emotions associated with my father. Changing my name was a way of breaking free from the past and creating a new identity for myself.
👉 Lastly, I became homeless as a teen and was taken in by the Lee family, who showed me love, kindness, and support. They became my second family, and I wanted to honor them by taking their surname as my own.
Though doing a name change was an unconventional decision, it’s been 8 years of growth, 8 years of struggle, 8 years of serving, 8 years of learning, 8 years of laughter, and 8 years of becoming the man that my adoptive family would love to call their own. Don’t be afraid of making an unconventional choice that will change your life, be afraid of settling for a life that doesn't allow you to become the person you were meant to be. Maybe not Spiderman, but you could still be someone’s hero! 🦸
