How do you get started in real estate?
Each person's journey in the commercial #realestate industry is unique. CoStar Group / LoopNet recently wrote about mine in its terrific new interview series:
"My First CRE Investment"
My journey involves a chance encounter with the amazing MaryAnne Gilmartin of MAG Partners LP and her son Devin Gilmartin of The Canvas Global, Inc. over dinner at Harvard Business School and Harvard University Graduate School of Design's Real Estate Weekend in 2017, then giving them a tour of my alma mater, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the next day, and then going on a family vacation with my parents to Australia. Just a few weeks later, I left my job with the real estate development company Extell to start Amanat Properties, which I named after my grandfather. ❤️
I talk about this crazy path, as well as my first project, a redevelopment of a historic multifamily building in the City of Hoboken with a great team - Hanini Group, AKT Designs LLC and Magyar Bank. Many of my friends are familiar with parts of the story, but this is the first time it is in one place!

I am hosting the 2nd web-based Commonplace Event this Thursday! 💰
Equity for real estate development is not easily available to small and mid-sized real estate developers. Even those with strong track records in affordable and workforce #housing find it challenging to access capital needed for acquisition and pre-development for these projects. From my own experience, I know that digging into personal savings, raising money from friends and family and using high-interest-rate loans are risky and limited "band-aid" solutions. More broadly, this limits the delivery of housing at a variety of scales, which is exactly what we need right now. 🔨
We will explore this topic in-depth from the co-GP, LP, preferred equity and mezzanine financing perspectives.
Hear from myself and these 3 amazing real estate investors:
Caleb Ratinetz of Asland Capital Partners Rodrigo Da Silva of Dure Investment Group Joe Carroll of Stolar Capital
I'll open with an overview of current equity options and the challenges in accessing them that we have heard from 100s of developers across the country. I will then dive into equity products and processes with my friends, Caleb, Rodrigo and Joe. We'll finish with a conversation of how accessing equity may change in the years ahead, leaving time for audience Q&A. I will be moderating and bringing the hottakes, as always in my style, which I like to say, is Terri Gross plus parts Oprah and Sacha Baron Cohen. 🔥🔥🔥
And no Zoom for us! We use Hopin, an interactive software for web-based events that is WAY more fun to use. 🎆
