Highlights
We’ve recently welcomed another set of terrific Growth engineers to Patreon — Welcome Andy Lianghua Xu, Sahil Patel, Ruhi Pudipeddi, Michael Zhou!
So proud to be a part of a company that truly believes in empowering creators and helping them build, own, and grow their business. From a technical standpoint as well, I deeply resonate with our approach to Growth work and some of our underlying principles:
-
[Sustainable impact] Focus on causally driving sustainable impact that fundamentally changes long-term trajectory. It is often missed or deliberately ignored that many improvements at surface level appear to spike growth when in reality the magnitude diminishes over time (caused by a variety of possible reasons such as novelty effects, or cannibalization of future growth).
-
[Unlock true value] Focus on unlocking true value for your users (or creators and members for us at Patreon). Deeply understand your company, understand the challenges, approach it from first principles, and build out solutions ground up. Spammy, hacky approaches seldom help and often hurt in the long-term. There is always a thoughtful framework to powerful growth levers such as emails, notifications, or even various incentives to driving engagement.
-
[Simplicity] Ask the right questions, identify simple hypotheses, strive to simplify experiences, focus on learning clean insights, approach solutions from the standpoint of simplicity rather than multi-hop causality chains.
-
[Hypothesis-driven experimentation] There are a ton of great resources across the web on experimentation methods & best practices. Lead with hypotheses and work towards both impact and learnings. If every experiment leads to a big win, you are probably not exploring broadly enough.
-
[Cross-functional partnership] Growth by nature is often more cross-functional than many product teams. Lean in to broad partnership across the company, seek input, foster a culture of discussion, debate, even disagreement. Set principles around prioritization as there will always be an ever-growing set of opportunities, numerous hypotheses, strong and varied opinions on conviction-driven bets, and healthy tension between tactical and strategic directions.
-
[Empathy for your users] It is critical that you retain a deep empathy and understanding of your user base. At Patreon we have the rather rare luxury of the Growth team’s goals being in direct alignment with the outcomes our creators are looking for. It is still critical that one maintains a strong partnership mindset where growth is often a shared journey that a company and its user base jointly embark upon.
