Over the years, I'm coming to recognize that there are basically 2 camps when it comes to the local news coverage we receive. With over 30,000 residents served through shared housing, you can imagine we have every flavor of good or bad story you can imagine, so it's an interesting view into the human psyche to see where the media and certain individuals tend to focus.
In one camp, there are stations that thrive on fear-mongering, who largely ignore the scale of the affordable housing crisis and any practical solutions thereto, choosing instead to focus on salacious tidbits, conspiracy theories, or more typically NIMBY neighbors who don't want "those people" in their neighborhoods... even when "those people" are the ones teaching their kids and grandkids, serving their meals, protecting them, and delivering their packages.
Fortunately, there's another camp where news stations are focused on feel-good stories of hope in a world where opportunities are already too few. These tend to focus on the otherwise invisible humans who leverage PadSplit to build savings and transform their lives. I was grateful to see an outstanding local story come out of Houston this week that fell firmly into this second camp, after the station reached out to us while researching affordable housing options.
