Highlights
Three months ago, I learned that my four-year-old scored high on the spectrum. My initial response was to laugh. I know that sounds strange, but my first thought was, “Well, now we know he’s an over-achiever like his mama.” But as the news sank in, I felt confused and in desperate need of a game plan. I reached out to a friend, who sent me back a short text that transformed my way of thinking ever since. In five simple thoughts, he reshaped the identity I had begun to form for my son based on societal norms. He reminded me that life is lived based on who we're meant to be.
I’m sharing his text because if it helped me, I'm guessing it may help another parent who has received or will receive similar news.
It’s not what you’re called; it’s what you answer to.
Max’s suggestions to Audrey: 1. Your child is a genius… just let him show you how. 2. Everybody else is wrong… just let him show you how. 3. Your child will f*ck with you every chance he gets… just don’t let him. 4. Don’t worry about expectations… because YOUR child is beyond the norm. Don’t expect the norm… exceed it. 5. Your child is limitless and needs to believe that to reach for the stars. Every generation should believe they make us better. Otherwise, there’s no hope. YOUR kid can make us a lot better.
