💥What a day! There aren't enough words to describe Retail fest last Thursday. One contender is "phenomenal" and here are a few more.

👌🏾Fantastic venue, fantastic speakers and storytellers, but too many to name them all. Here are some of the most memorable bits for me.

🚀Innovation: In the context of the game theme, a snake and ladders 🐍&🪜analogy illustrated how large organisations navigate the multitude of ideas and technologies in the market while staying focused on their priorities and development roadmap. They face disruptions (snakes) such as crypto, the metaverse, AI, and changing demands, which are hot topics in boardroom discussions. However, tackling and mastering all these alongside existing priorities requires significant time and resources, which are currently scarce. If the leadership team allows these disruptions, they can send teams back to square one. To counteract and address these challenges, organizations can utilise tools (ladders) such as third-party solutions (cloud, off-the-shelf, open source, and industry standards) and techniques (microservices, out-of-the-box solutions, reusable APIs, etc.).

📢Sustainability: "Sustainability is not about having a competitive advantage, it's about setting an example." Just wanted to leave that here...

👩🏽‍💻Transformation: I have discovered COBOL, a legacy coding language that I have decided I do not need to learn or burden myself with FOMO about not knowing. COBOL is still used and in demand as it is giving a serious challenge to the transformation teams at large retailers who struggle to find people and systems that still use it. COBOL is essentially like a fax machine used to run a business managed by xenials.

💡In conclusion and if you got this far, a few things are now clear:

  • I really like events (especially the good ones).
  • I evidently have too much time on my hands.
  • I don't mind jumping headfirst on a bouncy castle (or a conversation about sustainability in the fashion industry, for that matter).
  • This is my way of saying thank you to the The Retail Hive and RetailFest UK team for the invite. I also ate all of the food 🤌🏾 and tried all of the games, cheered on the live artists, and embarrassingly napped in the front row for a few minutes, missing the best bits on marketplace strategies because, well, the food was substantial and the sugar rush and emotion were too much.
  • Please do invite me again, I usually behave myself.

Thanks to amazing speakers, too many to name them all: Darryl Beckford, JLP Saul Resnick, DHL Jo Hickson, (holding what is possibly the best job in the industry), Tesco Stuart Ramage, M&S Fiona Brown, Boots. Ket Patel, Helen White, Charles Howell-Morley Ben Reardon , Stefanie Sahmel, Abel & Cole...
