Michael Eisenberg opened our Finance & Tech Mission stating “You didn’t come to bear witness. You came to feel viscerally part of this.” I now understand, I came to Israel during a war to feel intimately connected, not only to the horrors of October 7, but also to the power that is the State of Israel.
Important to know: Israel is OPEN for business. Google for Startups & Reichman University’s Venture arm were inspiring. We learned of Israel’s “national response to the evil savages who came to destroy our innovative plans for the future.” The Wifi Password at Google sums up this country's resilience: NoMatterWhat.
A producer of the Nova Festival is one shining example. Within seconds of understanding what was happening 10/7, he and the other producers sprung into action saving lives, helping the injured hide/get out/move to hospitals. He likely could have left, yet he didn't consider doing so for even a second. He told us, “since 7 October, I am a believer. Every day I wake up and know my purpose - to help the other survivors.” His efforts are saving lives daily.
The sheer devastation in Kibbutz Kfar Aza is beyond imagination. My mind cannot move away from the teenaged girls whose rooms I saw riddled with bullet holes and filled with smoke. The blood had been cleaned but we heard of the evil. Shout out the names Ziv & Gali berman, Emily Damari & Doron Shtinhrecher who were stolen from the teen housing in Kfar Aza and remain hostages, along with 131 others. The yellow bird figurine pictured here, now sits outside one of the girls’ rooms, in this almost empty kibbutz.
The “car graveyard” once filled with over 1600 torched, bombed and bullet riddled vehicles (one of which had the remains of 16 people) was a striking scene of devastation. The day we visited, the bright yellow in bloom represented to me just a sliver of optimism.
A high point was our dinner on the base of an elite army unit. I spoke with a number of soldiers, each more impressive than the next. The one I spent most of the evening with was in his late 30’s, the father of two young girls with a wife who blocked their front door on October 7. He was trying to leave to do what he could, even before he was called to serve. She feared he would be killed that day but in the end, she let him go. He's missing his daughter's birthday & I lamented the many months he's missed with his family. He responded with complete confidence that he was exactly where he's supposed to be, doing precisely what he should be doing to save the Jewish people, the country and likely the world. He knows with full clarity what Hamas is capable of, if Israel doesn’t fight to destroy every last vestige.
