Avi Kenny

PhD Candidate, Biostatistics at University of Washington

Avi Kenny is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at Duke University, with a secondary appointment at the Duke Global Health Institute.12 He holds a PhD in biostatistics from the University of Washington, where he worked with Dr. Marco Carone.135

Kenny previously served as the Director of Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation at Last Mile Health for five years in Liberia.123 His current research interests include statistical methods to handle treatment effect heterogeneity in cluster randomized trials, survival analysis using machine learning tools, evaluation of global health programs, and data quality assurance in low-resource settings.125

Kenny's interest in global health began during his junior year at Brown University when he worked with Gardens for Health International in Rwanda.34 This experience motivated him to focus his career on global health and address healthcare inequity in the developing world.3 He chose to study biostatistics to apply mathematical thinking to real-world problems and gain skills in research and data analysis.346 He was drawn to the University of Washington because of its rigorous biostatistics program, focus on practical applications, and faculty involvement in global health and causal inference research.346
