Avinoam Patt

Director, Center for Judaic Studies and Contemporary Jewish Life at University of Connecticut

Avinoam J. Patt is a prominent scholar in Jewish studies and Holocaust history. He currently serves as the Maurice Greenberg Professor of Holocaust Studies at New York University and the inaugural director of NYU's Center for Study of Antisemitism.2 Prior to this, he held the position of Doris and Simon Konover Chair of Judaic Studies and Director of the Center for Judaic Studies and Contemporary Jewish Life at the University of Connecticut.15

Dr. Patt received his B.A. in Religion with a Judaic Studies concentration from Emory University in 1997 and his Ph.D. in Hebrew and Judaic Studies and Modern European History from New York University in 2005.13 His academic career includes positions at the University of Hartford, where he was the Philip D. Feltman Professor of Modern Jewish History from 2007 to 2019.14

Throughout his career, Dr. Patt has authored and edited numerous books on Jewish history, Holocaust studies, and contemporary Jewish life. Some of his notable works include:

  • "Finding Home and Homeland: Jewish Youth and Zionism in the Aftermath of the Holocaust" (2009)34
  • "The Jewish Heroes of Warsaw: The Afterlife of the Revolt" (2021)3
  • "Israel and the Holocaust" (forthcoming in 2024)12

In Spring 2022, Dr. Patt created a popular one-credit course at the University of Connecticut titled "Why the Jews: Confronting Antisemitism," which reached over 1,600 students in its first semester.12 His research focuses on Jewish responses to the Holocaust, Zionism, and contemporary Jewish life.14

Dr. Patt's expertise and contributions to the field have led to his recent appointment as the inaugural director of NYU's Center for Study of Antisemitism, where he aims to expand the impact of scholarship and education in confronting antisemitism on local, national, and global levels.2
