Highlights
Dear people of LinkedIn
I have an important life update to share. After more than 13 years ( across two stints ), my life as a CaratLaner has come to an end. 🥹🥹
This brings to an end what has been the most beautiful phase of my life. In so many different ways. I know it sounds highly cliched but I finally discovered myself here - what I was really good at and what I enjoyed doing the most. As a result I was in a constant state of flow during my time here and this experience gave me everything that I could have asked for in life. Although I am a very optimistic person, I don’t think I will ever experience life the way I experienced it in CL.
There are two reasons for my decision. One, is to reprioritise things in life. At the risk of sounding controversial, building a business takes a lot of sacrifice and puts work life balance on the back burner. Given how everything turned out, it was totally worth it though. But things change in life and so do our priorities. Going forward, I am aiming for a lot more balance.
The other reason is regret minimisation. There are lots of things that I have always wanted to do. I want to start now and not leave it for when it’s already too late.
As of now, I don’t know what I will do work wise. I am going to try a few things and take some time to figure out my future. I am certain though that I will work in the startup ecosystem and try and help build more CaratLanes. In what capacity is what I am figuring out. Hopefully I will pursue all the other interests that I have. People who know me know what I am talking about.
I like to say my thanks in private but I have to use a forum like this to thank one particular set of stakeholders - all the customers of CaratLane. You are the biggest reason I am in this wonderful position. That I have this kind of choice. You are responsible for all the things that CaratLane gave me.
Because you helped create CaratLane 🙏🙏
Special thanks to all the early buyers. Who gave us a chance in the 2008-15 period when we were still finding our feet. Thanks to the loyal fans who spread the word about CaratLane and were generous in giving us feedback to make things better. Thanks to the people who considered CaratLane but didn’t buy. Trying to understand why we weren’t good enough for you helped fix a lot of conversion problems which changed the business. Thanks to all the customers who cared enough to complain. It helped improve customer experience in a big way. You have all helped in creating this wonderful company. I thank you all one final time.
See you soon in the next phase.
I have two requests for everyone following the Olympics. Every second or third post on LinkedIn seems to be about the Olympics so it’s quite clear that there is massive interest and lots of people are thinking about it.
Our sports budget is very tiny and I don’t think it’s going to be increased massively anytime soon. We need more money to create more champions. So please contribute. Give money to support sportspersons. You can give money to the Olympic Gold Quest. Run by former India hockey captain Viren Rasquinha they have supported more than half the medal winners at the current and past few Olympics. You can read what they do and how they do it on their website. They are absolutely genuine and you can be rest assured that every paisa that you contribute will be put to good use. You can also contribute to JSW Sports Pvt Ltd and Go Sports.
Second, please support and watch these sports even when the Olympics are not on. These sports don’t get a lot of corporate money because companies make decisions based on viewership and news coverage as proxies for popularity and support. If more people watch more often and keep talking about it, more corporate money is bound to come in. Another excellent suggestion by Ankit Goyal. Follow the sportspeople on social media so that they can become big brands and generate more money. CSR budgets can also be used to support these sports.
Remember we don’t have to keep cribbing about the govt and lack of corporate sponsorship. We can make a difference. More money will significantly increase the chances of a double digit medal haul at Los Angeles 2028.
Thank you 🙏🇮🇳
