Azad Essa is a South African journalist based in New York, specializing in covering US foreign policy, Islamophobia, and race in the US for Middle East Eye.

Before his current role, Azad Essa worked at Al Jazeera English for eight years, winning awards for his coverage of the Arab Spring. He reported on politics, development, and poverty across Africa and South Asia.

Azad Essa's investigative work on the predatory behavior of peacekeepers in war zones earned him the 2017 UN Correspondents Association International Prize. He is also a published author with books like Zuma’s Bastard and Out of the Shadows.

In addition to his work in journalism and writing, Azad Essa has contributed to publications like The Washington Post and Foreign Policy. He was a lead foreign affairs columnist for the Independent Media group in South Africa.

Azad Essa is a versatile professional who has produced award-winning short documentaries. His documentary 'Out of sight in Kashmir' received the Gold Telly Award in 2020.

Azad Essa holds a diverse educational background, including a Visiting Fellowship at Harvard University's Nieman Foundation and master's degrees in Sociology and International Relations from The University of Freiburg and Jawaharlal Nehru University, respectively.

He completed his undergraduate studies in Social Sciences and Industrial and Organizational Psychology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
