The Global Forest Watch reports that the world lost 3.75 million hectares of tropical primary rainforests in 2023 alone, which is an area equivalent to the size of Iceland. These figures highlight the urgent need for immediate action to protect our natural heritage.
Deforestation, in particular, poses a severe threat to our ecosystem. It leads to habitat loss, diminishing biodiversity, and contributes to climate change by increasing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. A recent investigation revealed that a major furniture giant has been sourcing wood from European Union’s pristine forests, causing irreversible damage to these vital ecosystems to meet the global demand for furniture.
In response to such challenges, STEER World is pioneering solutions to combat deforestation. By developing and promoting nano-compounded affordable material that can substitute wood for all practical purposes, STEER World aims to reduce the dependence on natural forests. Innovation cannot happen in isolation. Let us do what it takes this World Environment Day. UN Climate Change Global Innovation Hub’s Fifth Systemic Innovation Workshop in Bangalore filled me with hope and determination for our collective future. Gaia The Earth Foundation and BuzzOnEarth joined UNFCCC UN in organizing this workshop along with STEER World. These workshops create a systematic approach to progress where the purpose is social through economical means with due considerations to the pressing and critical needs of our environment. At the heart of our discussions was systemic innovation, which goes beyond isolated solutions to consider entire systems—integrating technology, policies, business models, and societal norms. Systemic innovation identifies leverage points within these interconnected systems to create scalable and sustainable impacts, requiring holistic thinking about how each element interacts within the broader ecosystem. The workshop highlighted a crucial truth: "innovation cannot happen in isolation". The complexities of today's global challenges—climate change, sustainability, and social equity—demand collaboration across diverse sectors and disciplines. By bringing together tech companies, startups, venture capital firms, policymakers, and industry representatives, we created a rich tapestry of perspectives and expertise. This collaboration enabled us to conceptualize solutions that are innovative, practical, and widely applicable. One of the most inspiring aspects of this workshop was the collective commitment to action. We didn’t just discuss challenges; we formulated concrete plans to tackle them. By exploring existing solutions and identifying gaps, we set the stage for new innovations that align with our climate and sustainability goals. This process of ideation and collaboration reinforced the belief that by working together, we can achieve far more than we could alone. As I reflect on the past few days, I am filled with a renewed sense of purpose. The journey ahead is challenging, but it is also filled with opportunities for groundbreaking change.
