Soapbox 🧼📦 post:

I’ve been deeply humbled and honoured to be doing lots of #startupmentorship work as of late, in different formats and via different programs. Today I was reflecting on three things consistently coming up in pre-seed / pre-product pitches that I thought it might be useful to proactively comment on.

Caveats / disclaimers:

  • I’m not an investor, and haven’t worked for a VC firm. My surmise on what’s effective is just … what I hope would be.
  • These are just my thoughts. Best advice a founder can take is to take inputs, but at some point stop trying to incorporate all advice and trust your own instincts.
  • To that end, some very smart people may disagree with me. I’m open to comments.
  • I have definitely not done all this right, but learned (and am still learning) after the fact. Much of it is easier said than done.

Working on a pitch? Here are three asks:

  1. Please, please don’t start with a description of tech, product or UX. The what isn’t important at this stage (because you likely haven’t built much yet anyway), not nearly as much as the who and the why. Anything AI-enabled (like mixed reality, Blockchain, rapid manufacturing, or even mobile tech before it) isn’t the hook unless it’s solving a compelling problem. Instead, inspire with the story: who’s got the problem or friction with what they’re trying to do, surprise me with the detail to which you understand them. Describe the current situation in their words and make me believe I’d hear the same thing. Then line that up with “why you”. Everything else - business model, tech, competitive positioning, go to market, bowling pin expansion strategy - will all flow much more logically from there; the reader / listener will believe it all because it’s based on an understanding of the gap from the customer / payer’s perspective and your ability to action it.

  2. The market size slide is the bane of my existence. The size of the market is not the total capitalization of your B2B customer segment. It’s also not the size of the market of product category you’re in (because that’s feature, not problem-focused). It’s only how much money is currently being spent or lost because of the problem you’re solving, and what % of that money will be diverted instead to paying you, because that’s a better choice. Also your initial segment must be unintuitively tiny, so it’s consistent, homogeneous and not dominated by an enormous encumbent. Show me where you’ll start then eventually grow to.

  3. Simple: there are slides to Email out and read independently, with text, references, appendices etc (IMHO only sent out after the first meeting), and there are slides to present: not the same thing. Presentation slides (in particular the 1-6 min versions) are illustrations that supplement your speaking. I can’t concentrate on listening to you and reading at the same time.

Compelling? Useful? Wrong? Missing the point? What do you think?
