Coming to Vietnam for business as someone who was brought up on the Vietnam War cinematic representations from the '80s, is an amazing experience. Whenever I came up to think on Vietnam in the past, scenes from Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket or Platoon came to my mind with the vast jungles and mangrove forests patrolled by American GIs who toured here (in total more than 3M American soldiers served in Vietnam during the conflict years) - all that effort, with a spend of over a trillion dollar (in 2024 value), nearly 60,000 American losses and two generations that since the end of the war still carry the Vietnam syndrome - were part of the failed military doctrine and political miscalculations that impacted not only Vietnam as the main battlefield arena, but spilled to neighbouring countries, and of course the entire American society.

What worked for the Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties over 500 years may still work in 2023...
