Are most leaders failing?

Last week, we asked a group of 23 high-potential leaders what differentiates the best from the worst leaders. What do you think their answer was?

When it comes to people leadership, personality plays a huge role. As we grow as leaders, we often lack effective strategies for adapting our style. This is especially true because growth brings stress and pressure.

For example, certain strengths can become culture killers when overused:

Bold & ambitious —> drowns out other perspectives Sensitive to others' needs —> can't give feedback Sense of urgency —> creates a reactive culture Flexible & open to change —> lacks strategy Full of ideas —> chases trends Passionate & excited —> becomes moody and volatile

Take a moment to stop and reflect. What is your leadership style when you are stressed?

As leaders, we must double down on our awareness and build evergreen self-regulation techniques. Just like personal wellness or marriage, leadership requires routine, constant attention, learning, and care.

What are the operating principles that drive your culture?

In remote work, we must be diligent and intentional about our culture and workplace norms. We see these norms as dynamic, evolving every 12-18 months. When done well, they are always changing, with new aspirations arising as certain norms become second nature.

At TailorCare, the leadership team is dedicated to fostering continual growth. Just yesterday, Moonlight Strategy, led by the extra-talented Brent Taylor, guided the leaders through an activation session, underscoring their commitment to leading authentically with a growth mindset.

For rapid growth cultures, the role of leadership is crucial. Leaders must model and reinforce desired cultural behaviors while simultaneously navigating their own growth. This requires tremendous self-awareness, patience, and recognition from the organization.

Cheers to this team for their inspired work in building a world-class culture! We love being your partner on this journey.

For more insights, check out short the podcast below from Harvard Business Review & Herminia Ibarra, where she talks about leaning into your stretch zone in order to lead authentically.

Thanks to Emily Callaghan, Julie Sumrack, John P., & Brent Taylor for the partnership getting this important work started.
