The Power of Cycling.
2024 has been an amazing year for cycling. In the Tour de France, Biniam Girmay was the first African to win, not one, but three stages; Sir Mark Cavendish achieved a historic 35th stage win; and Tadej Pogačar won both the Giro d'Italia & TdF. This was followed by phenomenal success from the British Cycling team at the Paris Olympics, with so many outstanding performances, including Tom Pidock's fight back after a puncture to win MTB gold, and in the women team sprint, Katy Marchant, Sophie Capewell and Emma Finucane took gold along with a new world record!
In July, myself and a good friend Matt Rees fulfilled a long time cycling goal, to complete one stage of the Tour de France; which this year began in Nice and took in four major climbs in the Alpes-Maritimes mountains; covering 138 km and 15,000 feet of elevation, and finishing at the top of the Col de la Couillole. Of the 15000 competitors who signed up, c.9000 finished, which indicates how tough it was. It was the hardest ride I've completed, the last 10kms of the final climb were especially challenging! The atmosphere was amazing, the organisation was excellent, and with supporters along the route cheering us on with shouts of 'allez allez', it was the closest I'll get to being a pro-cyclist. We also set out to raise awareness and funds for a great cycling charity WheelsForAll, which helps disabled children and adults get out in the fresh air on specially adapted bikes. As anyone who undertakes an event like this knows, it is not possible without the support of so many people, in my case: Matt Rees and the Brockham Cycling Club for their companionship in training; and all my family, friends and colleagues for their continual patience, encouragement and sacrifice! So why do it? As well as the obvious health benefits (recent research shows regular cyclists live 8-9 years longer than the general population), cycling has the power to encourage performance and improve mental health as well as reducing our carbon footprint: my commute by bike saves over 12kg of CO2 every day! I also hope it makes me a better leader, husband, father, friend and colleague; providing the energy, determination, patience and kindness to support those around me (feedback on a postcard welcome!).
