Highlights
The craziest friendship you could ever imagine, began at mile 19 of the 2018 Hawaii Ironman World Championships in Kona.
My 70 year old athlete Bob Knuckey had trained for 5 years to try to win the World Master Category and go after an elusive sub 12hr finish (think the 4 min mile from 50 years ago in running).
Bob was 19 miles into the final leg of the Ironman. He had already swim 2.4 miles and biked 112 miles and was now 19 miles into the final 26 mile race. His energy was low, his body was sore, but he was motivated to try to break 12 hours and win the title.
Late in an Ironman, all the competitors are struggling regardless of their age. Bob slowly passed a 50 year old who looked over with a brilliant smile and said "well done" as a man 20 years his senior was passing him. I took note. A mile later, the same man was now just 2 feet behind Bob running the exact pace at mile 20. A mile later the same thing. I said to the complete stranger, would you help push my athlete to the finishing line. He's trying to break 12 hours and having another person run beside you helps you go faster. He said he would try.
The two helped each other over the last 5 miles. Sometimes Bob pushing him and sometimes the stranger pushing Bob. With 400m to go to the finish line, Bob's legs got wobbly and he fell to the ground. The stranger knew not to touch him (so he wasn't DQ) but stopped his race to walk beside him. Bob got up and fell again and again the stranger stayed there. Finally Bob got across the line (in sub 12hrs) and won the title. Bob was carted off to the medical and the stranger got his medal and went home.
The next day my wife and I spoke about the amazing gesture of this man. With 5000 people at the awards party, we went table to table till we found him and brought him back to Team Canada's Table where he was cheered loudly. Two months later, we flew him into Ontario to be at our year end banquet (to the surprise of bob).
The strangers name was Jose Leal and our C3 Canadian Cross Training Club adopted Jose as an unofficial Canadian. Fast forward five years. It's now 2023 and now 75 year old Bob Knuckey is in Nice France this weekend, trying to win a new title and set a new record. Incredibly, the man we met in Kona 5 years ago, has flown to Nice to be there to cheer on his old pal. Tell me that sport doesn't make amazing friendships that last a life time. Good luck to all the athletes this weekend in Nice France and good luck to 75 year old Canadian Bob Knuckey as he tries to win his 4th World Title.
