Enjoyed the Dublin eComm meetup at Huckletree D2 last week.

Eamon FitzGerald shared a number of insights about wine eComm picked up while working at Naked Wines and recently when launching WineSpark.

Before Eamon setup Winespark in 2021 he worked at Naked Wines for ~10 years while they scaled their customer base from 20k - >300k customers.

Winespark now focusses on the Irish market - which has very high pricing versus UK and EU markets.

Winespark model is subscription, €10e a month - revenue comes from subscriptions, not wine margin/wine sales.

Wine sold to the customer at close to cost - a bottle which is usually €25 = €15, a bottle usually €50 = €30 a bottle.

Winespark's growth focus is on word of mouth(attached picture shows Eamon's neighbours enjoying some Winespark wines together).

Figures from the last 12 months - 5000 orders, 1000 members, 109 wines, 44 vendors, €950k revenue, high loyalty and repeat purchase, 4.7/5 star reviews.

eComm model = Usually new customers are acquired via intro coupon promotion - in the long run it's hard to control of this type of spending/growth, (sometimes people join just for the intro offer) it can be hard to grow profitably using £/%off offers - Eamon warns anyone growing via ads/£/%off promos to “be careful how you go down this road”.

Wine eComm - customers referred by friends were 7x more valuable - higher spend, less calls to support, more frequent purchases etc.

Tactics Prelaunch 1.Landing page - email address capture on landing page Point all of your friends and family leads to this page - Winespark had a head start at launch as they had a list of pre-launch sign-up leads to work through.

  1. Your network - Linkedin, work your contacts, etc. 5000 responses/ 1500 Winespark email signups attributable to the Naked Wines network following Eamonn’s goodbye message to his Naked Wines customers.

  2. Journalists - Quality/relevance rather than quantity - focus on a small number of relevant publications. When Winespark hit 1000 customers in Ireland, they gave a story exclusive to one publication - site signups went nuts after the article was published.

  3. Partnerships - Naked Wines acquired about 1m members via partnerships over the years.

  4. Drivers of customer loyalty - traditional wine eComm focus is on service. Winespark focuses on 3 areas - access, value, service.

Access - Eamon’s network of wine producers and high quality product.

Value - reward customer loyalty, encourage spend on higher quality. Malbec being tasted at the eComm Dublin meetup is basically cost price €15 vs €25.

Service - good customer experience using the service(easy to use for the customer, reliable dispatch/delivery, responsive and helpful support when things go wrong/the customer has questions).

Great to chat with Eamon FitzGerald Ayo Onamusi Jordan McCarthy Andy Doyle Paul Fogarty Eimear Fox (Walsh) Cathy Giles Paul K. at the event, too!

💬 TL:DR - if you are Dublin-based and have an idle, excess, functional laptop fit to donate to an educational project this week contact me - read more about where it'll go, below:-

👩‍🏫 My sister(a qualified primary school teacher) is going to Malawi on the 10th of May to volunteer with Stepping Stones International school based near Nkhata Bay and she is bringing over donations with her.

🖥️💻🖨️The school requested second hand laptops for their office so I'm just putting the feelers out to see if anyone would know of any second hand laptops not being used anymore (at home or in your workplace) which might be fit for donation to the school's admin staff to help them run the school?

More information on the Stepping Stones International school project in the link in comments below.

Tagging a couple of friends in Dublin to help with reach on LinkedIn for this ask(for a good cause, hope you don't mind 🙊🙈).
