I think that I need a crash course in economics. There is an old building paying civic taxes at say $100,000 per annum. A developer comes along, buys it, demolishes it and starts plans for 240 units. That means that the developer has created 240 filing cabinets in the sky to add to the tax revenue of Toronto. And on top of this there are levies, development fees and much more. Given that Toronto leads North America in condo development (or did until about 6 months ago) and given that tax revenue is being created enmasse, how can Toronto be in a shortfall with their budget in consideration of the boom that has happened over the past 20+ years? It almost reminds me of a Ponzi scheme where you need new income at the bottom consistently to keeps the balls in the air. Further, given the downturn in new projects and which will carry into a few years, Toronto is in worse shape with less new income generated as the filing cabinets will not be built to generate tax income.

Bottom line - has the City of Toronto pissed away tax dollars and now has to pay the price?

My rough, just on the fly message to Ontario Realtors and to OREA. Boy, did they truly open a can of worms. So many of us now are questioning the reason to have an OREA which I do want but in a greatly diminished capacity. Raw, not pretty but how I feel about this.
