Thank you Madeleine Speed for speaking to me about how Mars is accelerating our efforts to #NetZeroEmissions by 2050 with a new, aggressive target to deliver 50% reductions in 2030 — especially with my patchy service while visiting some of our cocoa and shea farmers in Ghana. As you rightly say, Mars has delivered 8% reductions in GHG emissions since our baseline year, while our business has grown 60%. In other words, our decoupling of growth and emissions is working, and we are now accelerating our actions. Mars has always followed the science, and science points us to five fundamentals that Net Zero roadmaps should consider to deliver real impact. We have built those fundamentals into our roadmap, including that there is no place for exclusions or exceptions and that we must prioritize performance over promises. I hope our roadmap clearly and powerfully demonstrates what Mars is doing and, critically, what we believe needs to happen at scale to help tackle the worst impacts of climate change.

Mars is collaborating with Delterra, Amcor and Procter & Gamble to demonstrate that it is possible to create successful programs for waste management and recycling systems particularly in the global south, that currently lacks the infrastructure we need to stop plastic pollution. The trick is to be able to achieve scale so these systems become self-sustained while at the same time create value for local communities.

With negotiations in Paris stalling to deliver a much needed global regulatory framework, voluntary action through public/private partnerships becomes even more important to ensure we keep moving in the right direction and ultimately deliver to protect people and planet.

Thank you Forbes and Jamie Hailstone for putting the spotlight on this issue and giving a voice to this important partnership. We hope this will encourage others in the industry to join us soon.
