Bastiano Sanna

EVP, Chief of Cell and Genetic Therapies

Bastiano Sanna is a prominent figure known for his role in enhancing research, development, and manufacturing within the field of cell and genetic therapy programs at Vertex. His work includes focusing on hemoglobinopathies, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, myotonic dystrophy type 1, and type 1 diabetes.

Education-wise, Bastiano Sanna pursued a Visiting PhD in Pharmacology at the University of Cambridge and a PhD in Biotechnology from Università degli Studi di Sassari.

With a rich organizational background, Sanna has held key positions such as EVP, Chief of Cell and Genetic Therapies and VCGT Site Head at Vertex Pharmaceuticals. He also served as the Chief Executive Officer and President at Semma Therapeutics, Chief Operating Officer at Magenta Therapeutics, and Global Program Head for Stem Cells Transplant and CAR-T Cells in the Cell and Gene Therapy Unit at Novartis. Additionally, he has experience as the Head of Portfolio Management and Strategic Planning at Novartis, as a Consultant at Leerink Swann, and as an Investigator at Novartis. Sanna has also contributed as a Research Fellow at both the Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cambridge.
