When a fish is more than just a fish…

2021 has been a tough year for me - as great as it has been in so many ways it has come with some definite challenges and dark times for me and my family. I’ve used these challenging times to dig deep and to try and learn lessons about myself as well as life in general.

My closest friends and colleagues have felt the challenges along with me, often sharing thoughts, advice and even tears along the way and I couldn’t be more blessed to be call all of them friends. So many of them don’t quite know the impact they have on my life even though I try my hardest to convey that on a regular basis - I’m so grateful for all of them.

One unique opportunity I have is the ability to share adventures with a few of them.

Each executive meeting we start with a leadership minute and we rotate through the group and each take a turn sharing something we have read, listened to, watched etc. We recently had a thought from ♠️Kyle Shurtz who shared a podcast he listened to on keys to long-lasting relationships.

One of the six keys to successful long-term relationships is “adventures”. Good adventures typically are a test of our true character. This can expose the very best character traits and sometimes the worst depending on the situation - Andrew Melchior saw the worst come out of me in Alaska when the tide was rising and we were stuck on an island. We are still alive so you know that particular adventur ended fine.

Adventures tend to to make us vulnerable and allow us to develop deep connections with those that we share them with.

A week ago I had the opportunity to go on an adventure - we wanted to get one last warm-weather fly fishing trip in before the weather turned cold (fly fishing can still be good in the cold). I’m still learning this craft and have a lot to learn. We had been fishing for a few hours and had caught quite a few and were getting ready call it a trip. The others had had success in one particular area and had caught some nice fish - I had tried it once and didn’t seem to have the right touch early on. David Mink said let’s go give that hole one more shot before we head out - I was in. On my over to the hole I proceeded to tell Dave I was gonna catch the biggest fish in there.

I was just about to be done after 10-15 casts when I pulled back hard to move my fly in another direction and hooked into a monster. I may not have caught the biggest one in there, but it sure felt like it at the time. I was in for the fight of a lifetime on a fly rod.

This beautiful 27.5 inch Splake was more than just a fish on a fly - it was an ADVENTURE. It was moment in time where I was able to escape one the most challenging years of my life and share the catch of a lifetime with a few of my closest friends - who I also happen to call colleagues.

If you are in a role where your job is to develop relationships - share adventures. I promise relationships will be strengthened by your investment.

I learned about The Third Door on a podcast and it has been fantastic! My favorite part so far come from Alex Banayan’s interview with Pitbull (The Rapper)

“Always stay an intern - humble yourself to learn even when you are at the top of your game. The moment you get comfortable being an executive is the moment you start to fail”

I have always pushed myself to continue to learn and not settle. I can absolutely do better - I have tried hard lately to push myself to learn things I wouldn’t even consider interesting in my field or position so that I can be aware of them when the time/need arises.

Curious what others do to help themselves prioritize that in their busy schedules?
