Highlights
Hot off the YouTube streams and Conan O'Brien's "Hot Ones" episode is my new favorite.
It's captivating to watch a comedian who has crafted both his skill and his unique style so well that he can seamlessly go from an insightful story or comment to SPOILER I WON'T SHARE and screaming at the camera to get the laugh.
My favorite parts, tied to some takeaways (COME BACK TO THIS LATER TO AVOID SPOILERS): . . . . .
-
The pocket wings. Conan's hands were coated three wings in and that pocket had to have been disgusting, but the commitment to the bit--including calling his doctor to hold more--was hilarious each and every time. That's commitment, and it's crucial when you have a creative idea that many others have to see complete in order to "get it."
-
Conan's insight that it's an amateur move to admit an interview isn't going well. It's not just that it supports the "fake it 'till you make it" adage. It's more that a great host or moderator has the skills to zig when the interview zags. And a great entertainer understands that you have to make the audience think they've seen a show worth their money/time/attention, even if you're propping it up a bit.
-
Sean adding to Conan's takeaway that you can't predict the future with this gem: "You can only connect the dots looking backward, not forward." You just don't see how the whole picture is going to connect until it's over--and that's OK. Just see enough of it that you can map out your next move (or two or 10) and embrace the belief (or comfort) that everything happens for a reason.
-
Conan complimenting Sean on doing his research. If you played "Hot Ones" bingo, you'll know this can practically be the FREE space. But to receive acknowledgement of (or shock at being caught off-guard) because you're that good of a researcher and interviewer is something to aspire to. And we all have our version of it. (Let me know what yours is below--I'd love to hear!)
-
Conan sharing how his comedic style & younger skit ideas were a 180-degree turn from the decades of the show before him--and later, screaming (while likely trying not to collapse from CHUGGING THREE SEPARATE HOT SAUCES, including Da Bomb) that he "overdid it to be funny and relevant to people at least 50 years younger than him." It can sometimes be exhausting (and disappointing) to spend so much of your time creating something for others to enjoy and seeing the art of that creation get monetized, thrown through the algorithm, crunched by a few AI tools and then boosted and juiced for more views. Yet, there are people that create content to game the system and clout chase, and there are people who create content because they think it's important or funny or beautiful or sad or insightful or helpful. You do it because you think it's worth doing and sharing, and you want others to get value from it. And if you're in the latter group, you get inspiration from almost everything around you. And that's pretty cool.

A FEW TRUTHS:
For the past three years—the first time in history—brands are now more trusted by consumers than government agencies, news media outlets & NGOs, according to Edelman’s Trust Barometer.
Today’s audiences want & expect brands to foster human connection—and savvy event marketers & strategists can foster dynamic brand communities that connect audiences by transforming their event & experience design.
