What's my runway?
Yesterday, a couple of founders asked me what our runway is. They wanted a simple numerical answer, like 12 months, to calculate when to start fundraising for a Series A.
However, there is no simple answer. As a startup, you always have control of your costs, and it's possible to reduce these dramatically if you need to. For example, one of my clients cut their spending by about 75% for 6 months. They did this by paying senior staff mostly in options, deferring supplier payments, agreeing on payment plans with HMRC, and cutting all but essential expenses, including letting some staff go.
These extreme actions completely stopped growth for 6 months but did allow them to raise money from an investor, and they are now on a path to profitability.
My answer was to give a range of 6 months - 18 months and explain the different risks involved. Ultimately we settled on starting to raise in 6 months' time to give us 6 months of uninterrupted growth.
When assessing your runway, don't just pick one number; think about different scenarios and what risks you are prepared to take.
Numbers tell you the score; a good finance professional will help you tell your story.
Thankyou Catherine Jones for your consultancy session with me this morning. Super useful to discuss my positioning, and brand strategy and swap some ideas. I left feeling very energised and with 5 things to go and implement.
