Corporate / Product Development at Verizon Wireless

I am currently a member of a small product innovation team that develops early stage product concepts across both consumer and enterprise segments. Essentially identifying early stage companies or white spaces that show potential for further Verizon development or partnership. The scope of my work is broad and includes anything from Industrial IoT, to consumer wearables, next generation edge compute and network infrastructure to computer vision applications, sports venue technology or cloud gaming.

Things I find interesting and why:

Edge computing and “the network is the computer”: The inability to reliably get large amounts of data from point A to point B very quickly has historically created real problems and opportunities, and some crazy work arounds. Looking forward to how technologies like mmWave wireless when paired with new capabilities to edge-ify more and more sophisticated computing may re shuffle the general when, where and how existing ‘cloud’ computing works.

Location services: So much focus of the Internet industry is on creating new “virtual” and “digital” equivalent of things. I am more interested in selectively injecting the Internet into how stuff in the real world already works, to make it work better or more efficiently. Effective use of location and presence data and technology often seems core to making this happen.

Pricing and the commercialization of hope, fear, and convenience: the way things are priced and the different value placed on things by different people, and the various attempts to exploit this (including “poor and lazy taxes”) is endlessly fascinating. The difference between just placing a market order vs selling an ITM put option can easily be the equivalent of a years interest on your 529 plan… ie for a little inconvenience you can squeeze some extra profit from someone else’s hope and/or fear.

Useful little “getting by” hacks: Ctrl-F and right click > view page source comes in handy almost daily at work to quickly find information; brine, salt or buttermilk pretty much any meat product, is always worth it;
