Fundraising with LPs is the most overlooked part of the VC job - yet the hardest and the most existential : no cash no investments.
Even more so as a first-time fund manager where pitching feels like tap dancing as you don't have track record per se.
In 2013, François, Maximilien and I had nothing to show but our personal track records as founders and a shared vision to lure our friends, business acquaintances then ultimately institutions into investing in our first fund closed in 2015.
A few years and some 300+ (very) happy LPs later, fundraising doesn’t feel like a tap dance anymore. We have top performance indicators to show and that helps.
👉 A few facts I’ve learnt along the way :
-
Fundraising is hard. It is hard as a founder but having been on both sides of the table, I would say it's even harder as a VC since you are literally asking people to entrust their money to you without telling them exactly where on earth you are going to invest it
-
It's a numbers game. You need to talk to a lot of LPs before you find one who is willing to invest in your fund - on average the investors LPs CRM is 4x bigger than the founders Angel & VC CRM. For our 1st fund we met close to 500 different people ;)
-
Patience is key. It takes months or even years to raise a fund. For first-time fund managers it takes up 1 to 2 years to reach the first closing of its first fund. And some relationships have to be nurtured for years before they pay off so probably some of the longest sales cycle on earth.
At Breega, we defined Assets Under Management as our company Northstar. The more money we can raise, the more we can invest, the closer it brings us to our purpose : propel as many pioneering and purpose-driven founders from idea into impact as possible.
And if we are able to grow our Northstar, it also means that our LPs are satisfied by our performance otherwise they would invest in someone else.

As investors, resilience is maybe the most essential quality we appreciate in founders. Olivier Goy, the founder of October, is a powerful example of this.
Building one of France's major scale-ups from the ground up is impressive enough, but turning the worst news you could receive into something positive and virtuous for people and society at large is truly awe-inspiring.
Last week, I had the privilege of attending the movie premiere of "Invincible été", where Olivier shares his story living with ALS disease and sends a powerful message of hope and life appreciation. The true essence of Carpe Diem.
Fighting ALS has always been a cause close to our hearts at Breega. Every year, we donate to the Institut du Cerveau – Paris Brain Institute to support their three full teams of scientists dedicated to ALS research (€200K in 2022), and we raise awareness about the disease within our team.
If you want to contribute too, go to the movies ! You can find the list of cinemas playing Invincible été here 👇 https://lnkd.in/ezraafX8 All proceeds will go to the Paris Brain Institute.
Let’s keep fighting #ALS and power science, together.
