Lead Scientist at Revive & Restore
Professional Background
Ben Novak is an acclaimed science communicator and scientist with a notable career specializing in genetic rescue and de-extinction, pioneering innovative avenues in conservation biology. Since 2012, Ben has played an instrumental role as a contracted consultant and lead scientist at Revive & Restore, an organization dedicated to advancing biotechnology for wildlife conservation. Through his expert guidance and collaboration, he has significantly contributed to the foundation of Revive & Restore's genetic rescue projects, particularly focusing on the flagship initiative, The Great Passenger Pigeon Comeback.
In this capacity, Ben has successfully coordinated various collaborators and partners, all with a shared vision of restoring the ecology of the Passenger Pigeon to the eastern forests of North America. His rich background in ecology, coupled with hands-on experience in ancient DNA laboratory work, has allowed him to participate in the groundbreaking endeavor of sequencing the Passenger Pigeon’s genome, alongside researching critical components of the species’ ecological niche that are essential for its restoration efforts. Ben's leadership in this project aligns with his broader mission of establishing comprehensive de-extinction protocols that transcend both laboratory and field applications.
Ben's professional expertise does not stop at Passenger Pigeons. He has expanded his duties within Revive & Restore to lead and co-lead various avian programs and contribute significantly to the organization's black-footed ferret genetic rescue initiatives. His passion for biotechnology extends to the management of newly formed funds, including the Catalyst Science Fund and the Marine Biobanking & Sequencing Fund, both aimed at financing cutting-edge genetic rescue projects targeting diverse species. He has actively promoted outreach and educational initiatives, participating in and co-organizing workshops and conferences designed to escalate the advancement of biotechnological research in conservation.
Additionally, Ben takes on the responsibility of graphic designer for Revive & Restore’s website and fundraising materials, showcasing his multifaceted skills and commitment to effective communication in conservation efforts.
