Yesterday was the fourth and final session of our Deep Tech Speaker Series at First Flight Venture Center. We had the honor of hosting Elif Balkas, CTO of Wolfspeed.

I'll be honest that while I had heard of Wolfspeed, I didn't really understand what they do. After Elif's engaging and technical presentation, I will say this - if you care about climate tech, electrification, and renewable energy, you should know about Wolfspeed.

**Wolfspeed is the global leader in silicon carbide technology and the only pure-play, vertically integrated silicon carbide company globally. They are a home-grown Triangle success, started out of NC State in the 80s and based here in the Triangle.

**Silicon carbide is an alternative to silicon-based chips that we are all familiar with for computing, but with far better properties for power electronics. Silicon carbide enables order-of-magnitude more compact, efficient, and powerful electronics, making it a key enabling technology in the electrification of our economy.

**However, it is a much more difficult material to work with as compared to silicon, and Wolfspeed has spent the last 35+ years developing the scientific, technical, and manufacturing expertise to commercialize this technology.

**Wolfspeed has recently developed the first commercial-scale 200mm silicon carbide wafer, which marks a significant milestone in the commercialization of this technology, positioning the company at the forefront of the transition to an electrified, cleaner, lower-carbon economy with applications including electric vehicles, DC fast charging, renewable energy, aviation, data centers, and even the electrification of heavy machinery.

Last week, I hosted the third session of our Deep Tech Speaker Series @ First Flight Venture Center. I had the opportunity to facilitate an investor panel with three deep tech VCs, including:

**Evan Shear of Oval Park Capital (Raleigh-based) **Liam King of 2ndF (Raleigh-based) **Swati Chaturvedi of Propelx (Bay Area-based)

It was incredible valuable for founders in our community to hear from these three their distinct approach to underwriting deep tech startups. I'll share a couple insights below:

** Too often, technical founders fall in love with their technologies and overemphasize the tech. All three panelist strongly encouraged founders to focus on the business case for their technology and explain it in high-level, non-technical terms to the greatest extent possible. **In addition to VC funding, the panelists emphasized both non-dilutive funding and strategic investments as important for funding deep tech startups. The vast majority of exits in deep tech occur through acquisitions rather than IPOs, so strategics are of particular importance.
