Houston, we have a problem. In 1997, Reed Hastings went to his local Blockbuster and rented the hit movie Apollo 13. He watched it, forgot to return it and was hit with a late fee of $40. That annoyed him. Surely there was a better way. He co-founded Netflix, a mail order dvd rental business. In 2000, Reed Hastings offered the burgeoning Netflix to Blockbuster for $50 million. They turned him down. In 2013, Blockbuster closed most of its stores due to its decline. On January 19, 2023, Reed Hastings said he would be stepping down as Netflix CEO with the company valued at $140 Billion and seen as the worlds leading streaming service. Reed solved the problem of late rentals and led the charge of the streaming era that we now take for granted. A job well done.
