Throughout his career, Ben has taken on critical roles that intersect leadership and technology, such as serving as the Product Manager for the RealSense Camera (R200) at Intel Corporation. This position benefitted from his analytical and technical skills while requiring a keen eye for innovation in product development. Furthermore, his tenure as Chief of Staff at Cornell University Army ROTC further illustrates his commitment to guiding future leaders and developing programs that support military training at the educational level.

On 15 January 2014, Captain Clayton Carpenter was completing a routine training flight at Hunter Army Airfield with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, only weeks after returning from Afghanistan. At 11:23pm local time, while on final approach to the airfield, Clayton's MH-60 helicopter experienced a mechanical failure that resulted in the loss of tail rotor control. A critical emergency in any situation, but even more so at low airspeed and still 80 feet above ground.
Nine years prior, Clayton and I were recently graduated West Point classmates who became roommates during US Army flight school at Ft. Rucker Alabama. As luck would have it, we also ended up being "stick buddies" in the UH-60 Blackhawk course. We ate dinner, studied, planned routes, and sweated through check rides together. I was always inspired by Clayton's work ethic and dedication. His no nonsense NYC-raised attitude was also a great counter balance to my light-hearted Missouri farm kid sensibility.
After flight school I left with orders for the 101st Airborne and was slated for Afghanistan. Clayton was headed to Hawaii and then Iraq with the 25th Infantry Division. Our deployments never lined up and Clayton also subsequently joined the 160th, which required even more training and deployment cycles. Sadly we would never see each other again.
When I learned that Clayton was killed in the accident I was heartbroken. But I also took heart that his final words and actions in the cockpit resulted in the survival of the rest of his crew.
I wanted to share this story to honor Clayton on the 10th anniversary of his passing and also remind us of the incredible operational risks our service members continue to take on every day.
