How do you go about picking side projects to work on in your precious free time?

Here's a handy checklist I use to decide when I have a new side project idea, in order of importance:

➡ Am I personally interested in this project? ➡ Will I learn something new that can be applied to my day job/career? ➡ Will the results from the project improve my life? ➡ Will it expose me to new tools/communities/modes of working I may not be familiar with? ➡ Will it bring any amount of happiness into the world? ⭐ [Bonus] Can it be monetized in some way?

Believe it or not, this criteria helped me decide to make my own pizza calendar!

✅ I wanted a wall calendar of just pizza pics and couldn't find one, so I was personally invested ✅ In the process of making a site for it, I got to experiment with a custom PayPal checkout integration, directly related to my day job working on payments ✅ The results look great on my wall ✅ Sharing the results on social media pushed me to embrace new social sharing features I hadn't been using ✅ Friends and family who bought calendars seem to be happy with them 🍕 [Bonus] So far I've turned a tiny profit - just enough to buy more pizza!
