Which is the better approach? Platforms or Point Solutions?

What we hear from investors: "Pick one thing and do it well" What we hear from clients: "We want one place that does what we need"

Are these competing ideas? I don't think so - it just depends on frame of reference.

In a platform approach, the "one thing" to excel at is integrating diverse functionalities seamlessly to meet client needs. Many point solutions are becoming commoditized, meaning they offer similar features and struggle to stand out. Focusing on doing one specific thing "better" might not provide a competitive edge.

In addition, when the market for point solutions is relatively mature, the platform approach can leverage the product-market fit that has already been established by the plethora of individual solutions.

The best arguments I've seen on this are from Parker Conrad, who summarizes three advantages: ✅ Deeper integration: Live shared data and reusable components across features ✅ Common UX patterns: Offer a consistent and intuitive user experience across functionalities ✅ Bundled pricing: Provides cost savings through integrated solutions, enhancing value for clients and winning vs. competitors on cost
