Highlights
I joined Twttr in 2008 after jumping on the wave at Ryan Carson's Future of Web Apps conference in London. It became Twitter and I made lots of good mates, met wonderful people.
In 2009 I started our local (Isle of Wight) Tweetup, I even ran a local Twestival with good friends including Matthew Chatfield and raised money for charity. I interviewed people for .net magazine, attended Andrew G.'s Media140 events. Twitter was a disruptor, innovator, exciting place. We saw it feature in the overthrowing of dictators (Arab Spring) and the broadcasting of breaking news.
Over the years my involvement in that platform has dropped, partly it was ego, I was a bigger voice in a smaller pool. But it got spammy, the bots arrived. Suddenly the great conversations I was having stopped, the signal to noise ratio was wrong.
Then Musk took over. What we have seen over the past week in the UK is what happens when hate is normalised. Free speech is vital to democracy but any platform that supports the blurring the lines between free speech and domestic terror is not a place I want to be.
Yesterday I deleted tens of thousands of tweets from my account, removed my profile pic and bio. The app is removed from my phone and my company will not be advertising on it. I'll keep the account there so no one can claim the handle.
Hope Not Hate.
In the 11 years of running Powered Now I’ve never accepted a corporate invite.
Sounds silly (maybe it is) but I struggle with this idea of not being in the office “working”. However today the guys from City Plumbing Vaillant Group and hansgrohe held a golf day at my local course… I was in! What’s more we won with -6.
Thank you to everyone that made it a great day. I’m thinking of a Powered Now golf event. Who’s in?
