An evening I’ll never forget as I was invited back last week to Oakwood Park Grammar School as the guest speaker for the annual presentation evening.
I hold very fond memories of attending presentation evening as a student. Only 7 years ago was I stood on the same stage as Head Boy. I certainly didn’t imagine I’d be asked back at 25.
On this special occasion, I chose to reflect on my recent transition from school to university to the working world, highlighting 5 transferable lessons that students might find useful as they navigate the scary, uncertain and confusing life of a teenager:

There’s certainly nothing ground-breaking about any of these lessons. But they do take on special resonance during the tumultuous years of young adulthood.
However, the real highlight of the evening was presenting awards to the many talented students in attendance. The evening is an invaluable part of the Oakwood calendar, providing a much needed pause in everyone’s busy schedule to shine a light on the hard work students and teachers put in. It’s heartening to see the event has evolved to showcase charity and community alongside the academic.
The occasion also provided a superb opportunity to catch up with many former teachers - all as inspiring, good-humoured and impressive as I remember.
