Benjamin Swerdlow

Aspiring Computer Scientist

Benjamin Swerdlow is a highly skilled individual, having started his journey in technology at a young age as the only high schooler at Hack for LA when he joined in 9th grade.

His talent was recognized early on when he bypassed security protocols while working on a script for Santa Monica's 311 report form, leading to an internship offer from a data scientist at the city.

By sophomore year, Swerdlow became the first high school student to assume the role of project manager at Hack for LA and later transitioned to work on the World Health Organization Volunteer App Collective, where he excelled as the co-client UI lead.

With fluency in multiple programming languages and experience working for tech startups, he has demonstrated his proficiency by developing various apps independently.

Currently serving as one of the overall technical leads as a junior, Swerdlow continues to push boundaries and innovate in the tech industry.

One of our customers is moving to our serverless environment. We had almost everything done but ONE PACKAGE DIDN'T WORK: Voice Activity Detection.

We tried the other packages, but nothing worked. To save the deal, I compiled libfvad to WASM with Emscripten, and created a new package built to do VAD serverlessly just for them.

We published this package 100% open source for anybody who wants to do Serverless Voice Activity Detection themselves without any third party vendors.

The future is open.

Yesterday, my cofounder Jacob Zwang and I went live for 3 HOURS to rebuild Slack — and it was a success!

In 3 hours and 33 minutes we:

  • Started with a single channel
  • Made live messaging and websockets
  • Styled the site to look like slack
  • Added multiple channels
  • Added sign in with passkeys for accounts
  • Added mobile styling

Here's the stack we used:

  • ☁️ Freestyle for backend, deployments and data storage
  • 🚀 Astro for SSR, routing and <ViewTransitions /> (amazing)
  • ⚛️ React as our Frontend Framework
  • 🎨 Tailwind for styling

FART stack for the win!
