Happy International Women's Day! Today we celebrate the achievements of women in all spheres of society and raise awareness for the fight for gender equality.
I wouldn’t be where I am today without amazing female mentors and all the women that came before me in CRE who paved the way to helping me get a seat at the table and communicate what women want from a shopping experience, merchandising mix, quality vs value of goods, etc. 18 years ago when I got into the business, I was the lone female in the room and now I am often having meetings where owners, retailers, and brokers on both sides are all female.
One thing that drew me to retail brokerage in commercial real estate was that there is no income cap, my splits are the same as my male counterparts, and there was no one dictating what I worked on, how much money I made, or even when I worked. That is not true in all facets of CRE but in brokerage I feel my worth and value is in my control.
Savvy owners and retailers see the value of having a female retail broker leading their teams. Women hold crucial purchasing power, driving 70-80% of all consumer purchasing decisions on a daily basis. Women also make up 93% of food purchases, 65% of new car purchases, 89% of bank account decisions, and 93% of over-the-counter pharmaceutical purchases. Female retail brokers understand the decision making rational, spending priorities, and can communicate to owners and retailers what their target demographic wants. What decisionmaker wants to hear, “Well my wife likes to shop at…..”?
On this day, let us remember that feminism isn't about making women strong but about recognizing and valuing their strengths. We stand in solidarity with all the amazing women who continue to pave the way for future generations.
