As a born & raised Romanian, I naturally feel tightly connected to Moldova. That connection has strengthened further when I moved to work there during the summer of 2021 and stayed through the onset of the Russian invasion into Ukraine.

Last winter, I personally witnessed the multiple increases in gas bills which got even higher than a standard gas bill in Western Europe. And this is in what they call "Europe's poorest country", meaning these bills represented a significant % of anyone's income in the country. As you might have guessed, I am not a big fan of this GDP-related moniker for Moldova. Moldova is so much more than "the poorest country in Europe". For instance, Moldova has some of the most competent people at its helm (two Harvard-educated women, no less!), with Madam President Maia Sandu being one of the most inspirational leaders I have had the (lucky) honour to meet and talk to in person while on an ad-hoc flight to Vienna. Her article below in Politico summarises why Moldova is worth your attention and how impactful supportive actions towards its energy independence can be!
