Very on-point breakdown - or rather, takedown - of Friedman’s painfully dehumanizing op-ed comparing the geopolitics of the Middle East to the “animal kingdom.” Please read!

Additionally, here’s my quick take from a DEI standpoint (assuming, for now, the best of intent on behalf of NYT and Thomas Friedman)

  1. If we don’t surround ourselves with ppl who can challenge our perspectives with different ones, our views become stale and ossified. In this case, Friedman happens to be an old white dude, so his blind spots are massive. But the same basic vulnerability would apply to me (a black, middle eastern guy) or anyone else. This is why diversity and representation matter!

  2. What does it say about the The New York Times editorial board that this piece made it through presumably more than one layer of editorial review? That no one was like ‘maybe this animal kingdom theme is problematic or dangerous?’

  3. The analogies themselves, in addition to being dangerous and dehumanizing, are also conceived and written sloppily. Rest assured, Friedman will be fine. Why is that?
