Highlights
Finding your people at work is almost impossible. But I actually did! For the past 10 years I’ve been lucky enough to work with Pam Lama. We started working together in February of 2014, and we somehow navigated our way through 10 managers, 2 acquisitions, an IPO, a rebrand, and a pandemic. We developed a professional synergy based on empathy, creative weirdness, and no-bullshit pragmatism. In a corporate world that is inherently competitive, it’s a rare thing to have a coworker you actually, really, for real, work well with. It makes all the difference.
A few weeks ago I made the decision to leave Slack. That departure is significant, but what’s more significant is the fact that I won’t be working with Pam for the first time since the Obama administration. Many of you met us at the same moment, worked with us as a duo, and had a hard time telling us apart. I totally get it, we’re very similar.
I’m starting a new chapter of my career and I want to celebrate and recognize the rare magic of the office duo. We might look a little weird walking around in matching plaid shirts and jeans and eating lunch together at the same 3 food trucks, but I tell you, it’s priceless to have a person at work with whom you can lower your guard, get real, and get moving. If you find someone who will challenge, encourage, and support you, then your life and your work will be better for it.
I replay those first months working together with Pam in 2014 and the determining factor in our partnership was that we met each other with little career ego. We wanted to make quality video and the fastest way to do that was to be honest, pragmatic, and collaborative. That’s easy to say, but it’s not easy to do. We all put on a face when we go to work, and it can be scary to lower that mask. Thank you Pam for allowing me to do so for the last 10 years.
So what’s next? I’m embarking on a solo career, and am open to new opportunities both full time and contract.
