Almost 35 years ago, my good friend Bob Feldman was named Head of the New York office of Ketchum Public Relations, and he approached me about coming to work with him in a recruiting/human resource role. I had to reveal to Bob that just two weeks earlier, while killing time on jury duty, I had put together an extensive business plan to start my own executive search firm. I came home from what should have been just another boring day at jury duty, and shared the vision for this business with my wife Doreen, who excitedly encouraged me to bring the vision to life and start a firm. So, while I was flattered by Bob Feldman’s offer, I knew I had to embark on starting my own firm.
In December 1989, Heyman Associates was launched. Six months later Lisa Ryan joined the firm and promptly spent the next 30+ years doing outstanding client work and being as close a friend and colleague as one could want at the office. I will always be grateful for that. Within another six months, Maryanne Rainone, a life-long friend of my wife Doreen’s, joined the firm and became our Chief Operating Officer, then proceeded to help us grow Heyman Associates from a series of personal relationships to success as a grown-up business.
The early days were exciting, thanks in no small part to having landed Ketchum Public Relations as an early client. I am eternally grateful to Bob Feldman for believing in us. After we landed our first “out of state” client, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maryland, we really thought we had made it to the big time. Little did we know that Heyman Associates would ultimately become an international search firm, working closely with sister companies in the UK and Germany, and starting a joint venture in Hong Kong and Singapore. We are thrilled to still have a close working relationship with Matthew Wall and Kate Hamilton-Baily of Taylor Bennett and Christian Loecker of GK Personalberatung, and we thank them for their friendship and support over the years.
In 2005 we were blessed with another great tipping point hire when Jessamyn Katz joined Heyman Associates in her very first job out of college. In nearly two decades with the firm, Jessamyn has had an enormous impact – from establishing our West Coast office, to managing our firm’s strategy, overseeing day-to-day operations, and carving out expanded specialty areas that have helped drive growth and create new opportunities. In January, Jessamyn will take over as the Chief Executive Officer of Heyman Associates, and there couldn’t be anyone better suited to do so. While I am proud of what I have been able to accomplish as a recruiter, nothing makes me prouder than having brought Lisa, Maryanne, and Jessamyn into our company.
