Bill Hibbert

Bell acoustics research, systems and software development.

Bill Hibbert is an expert in bell acoustics research who conducted extensive studies on the sound and tuning of bells. He was awarded a PhD by The Open University in April 2008 for his research into the musical acoustics of bells, particularly focusing on the note we hear when a bell is rung.2

Hibbert developed a software package called Wavanal that allows for easy investigation of bell acoustics. His research has continued since completing his PhD, and he maintains a growing collection of over 11,600 bell recordings spanning 9 centuries, hundreds of founders, and many countries, which he uses for ongoing investigations.2

His PhD thesis, titled "The Quantification of Strike Pitch and Pitch Shifts in Church Bells," aimed to quantify how the pitch or strike note of a bell is determined by the frequencies of its partials. The work provided new practical guidance for the design and tuning of bells and supported current research into pitch generation mechanisms in the human ear.1

Hibbert's research has made significant contributions to the field of bell acoustics, offering insights into the complex ways bells produce sound and addressing questions about which notes bells sound.2
