Values – Part 4 In my last 3 blog posts I presented 3 questions for you to answer. They’re designed to help you choose the values that will best guide you in the next chapter of your life.
Those questions relate to the meaning of values.
Our values are our unconditional beliefs about how we commit to live, demonstrated and made credible by our consistent behavior over time.
Those questions, to be answered in writing, are:
1. What are the names and meanings of your values?
2. Who taught or instilled in you the values you now hold?
3. How well have your values served or not served you.
Here's the final question.
Question 4: What Values Will You Choose Going Forward?
You can choose your values at any stage of your life. You can add new values, drop others, or opt to retain all the values you already have.
Neuroscience findings confirm we can do this at any time in our lives, but keep in mind, your shadow values will never disappear. They are always lurking, waiting to jump in whenever you fail to maintain conscious awareness of, and act in accordance with, your chosen values. Those shadow values offer you the comfort of the familiar and will, forever, exert a compelling hold on you.
Conscious awareness of your values and your will to live those values are the only way to override the lure of your shadow values.
Do this – Write down the answers to the questions below.
· Do your values serve you today in ways that align with your vision and your greater purpose?
· Will your values support you going forward?
· Have your values helped you live at your full potential?
· Which, if any, of your values will not support you going forward?
· What criteria will you use to select the values you wish to live? Those criteria inform your choice of whether to stay with your current values, or to adopt new values.
· Do your values reflect who you truly are or do they represent who others think you should be and what you should do? Do you hold your values because you think they make a good impression on others?
· Is it easy for you to keep your values in your everyday consciousness?
· If not, ask yourself: What would it take to maintain continuous, conscious awareness of my values?
· Can you look in the mirror and tell yourself that you are living your values?
· How often, when you face any kind of new situation, do you opt for instant gratification or avoidance of discomfort?
· In my previous blogs, I alluded to the criteria that can best serve you as you evaluate what your values should be, based on how well they will serve you in achieving your desires in your nest chapter.
In my next blog post, I will talk about those criteria.
